Step 1: Get your provisional licence
Apply for a provisional driving licence on GOV.UK. If you already have a provisional or full car licence, it already includes provisional motorcycle entitlement. You can ride a moped from 16 and a 125cc motorcycle from 17.

Step 2: Take your CBT
Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) is a one-day course that you must complete before riding on the road. It is not a test: you finish when your trainer is happy you can ride safely on your own. A CBT certificate is valid for 2 years. At Betta Biker Rider Training a CBT costs £225 with the bike and kit supplied, £180 on your own bike, or £125 when booked together with a DAS course.
With a CBT and a provisional licence you can ride a motorcycle or scooter up to 125cc with L plates. You cannot carry a passenger or use motorways. Read about our CBT course.
Step 3: Pass your motorcycle theory test
The motorcycle theory test has two parts, multiple-choice questions and hazard perception, taken on the same day at a theory test centre. You need to pass it before you can take Module 1 of the practical test. Book your theory test on GOV.UK.
Step 4: Choose your licence category
Which licence you can take depends on your age:
- A1 from age 17: motorcycles up to 125cc and 11kW.
- A2 from age 19: motorcycles up to 35kW.
- A (unrestricted) from age 24 through direct access, or from 21 if you have held an A2 licence for 2 years.
Full details are on GOV.UK.
Step 5: Train for and pass Module 1 and Module 2
The practical motorcycle test is in two parts. Module 1 is an off-road test of manoeuvres such as slow riding, a U-turn, emergency stop and hazard avoidance. Module 2 is an on-road test of around 40 minutes, including an eyesight check, safety questions and independent riding.
At Betta Biker Rider Training, our DAS course covers training for both modules and includes both test fees, bike hire and riding kit, including boots if you need them. It is sold as a 5-day course for beginners or a 4-day course for riders with some on-road experience. The 5-day course costs £1,350 and the 4-day course £1,200, or you can pay in instalments. See all prices. Read about our DAS course.

After your test, the DVSA Enhanced Rider Scheme is a full day of on-road coaching that can earn you an insurance discount with some insurers. Read about ERS.
